Real Salt Lake U-17/18 defeat San Jose Earthquakes U-17/18 in thrilling second half comeback

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake - Moises Rodriguez (2)DANVILLE, Calif. – Trailing for the majority of the match, goals from Luis Lopez and Corey Baird in the final twenty minutes preserved Real Salt Lake U-17/18’s winning streak which is now at a season high of seven matches.

RSL equalzied the match in the 70th-minute on a fortunate defensive blunder by a San Jose Earthquakes defender. Damian German charged down the right-wing and crossed to Baird, who made a run up the middle. The ball bounced between the defender’s legs and popped out to Baird, who then chipped the ‘keeper.

Twelve minutes later, Lopez finished a brilliant free kick from just outside the 18 for his second goal in as many matches.

San Jose pushed for the equalizer in the final minutes by lofting balls over the top. RSL held on and preserved their perfect start to 2014.

Fifteen minutes into the match, San Jose caught RSL’s defense in a bad position. A rebound bounced out of the box and ended up down the wing. A San Jose player whipped in a cross to the backpost where a handful of unmarked Earthquakes players were waiting. RSL goalkeeper Luis Barraza ran out to intercept the cross, but missed it before an San Jose player scored the opening goal.

Things changed for RSL at the start of the second half when Gui Leme and Matthias Binder were brought on. The Claret-and-Cobalt started to connect and touch the ball more, playing their game.

RSL U-17/18 will put their wining streak to the test this upcoming weekend against Seattle Sounders U-17/18 who are currently in second in the Northwest Division. Match kicks off at 11:00 AM at the Grande Sports World.

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake vs. Nomads SC U-16 -CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-16 & U-18 Academy teams are set to kickoff a busy March schedule against Southwest Division rivals Chivas USA U-16 & U-18 Academy on Saturday, March 8th, at the Grande Sports World.

The U-18 match is set to begin at 3:00 PM and will be followed by the U-16 match at 5:30 PM.

Real Salt Lake U-17/18, ranked #2 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer, is the current leader in the Southwest Division with a 10-1-3 record and has conceded a U-17/18 league best ten goals. Through six matches at home, RSL U-17/18 has won five matches, drew one and has outscored opponents 26-3. Eric Carbajal is the team leader in goals scored with nine and is followed by Sam Gleadle with seven. Jose Hernandez and Corey Baird have found the back of the net five times. Carbajal, Gleadle and Hernandez are all tied for the team lead with five assists each. In their most recent match, the U-17/18s defeated Nomads SC 3-2 on February 23rd with Gleadle recording a brace and Carbajal adding one.

In the previous matchup between these two sides, RSL U-17/18 defeated Chivas USA 2-0 in Los Angeles on October 5th. Chivas USA is currently holding the third position in the Southwest Division with a 10-4-4 record through 18 matches.

Real Salt Lake U-15/16, ranked #3 in the country by Top Drawer Soccer, is the current leader in the Southwest Division with an 11-1-2 record and is tied for the league high in goal difference with +37; 43 goals scored and 6 goals conceded. RSL U-15/16 has won all six matches played at home this year outscoring opponents 20-1. Sebastian Saucedo leads the team in scoring with 12 goals and is followed by Josh Doughty and Tate Schmitt, who have recorded five each. In their most recent match, the U-15/16s defeated Nomads SC 2-0. Evan Waldrep and Saucedo scored for the Claret-and-Cobalt.

In the previous matchup between the two sides, RSL U-15/16 defeated Chivas USA 3-1 in Los Angeles on October 5th. Chivas USA is currently holding the fifth position in the Southwest Division with a 7-6-5 record through 18 matches.

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake vs San Diego Surf U-16 - Josh Doughty (2)DEL MAR, Calif. – Real Salt Lake U-16 is now undefeated in ten matches – dating back to October 27th – following their 1-1 draw with Southwest Division rivals San Diego Surf on Saturday afternoon.

Fresh off of its impressive 2013-14 Generation Adidas Cup group stage triumph, this saw the Claret-and-Cobalt win Central Region qualifying, RSL U-16 Academy team struggled for the majority of the match, but looked like they would walk away with three points.

Sebastian Saucedo broke the scoreless deadlock three minutes before the halftime break when Danny Acosta stripped a Surf player around the halfway line. He dribbled forward and played to Sebastian Saucedo, who took a touch and finished near post. It was a sigh of relief due to the less than impressive first half showing, which saw Surf control the majority of the match with an aggressive attack that forced RSL U-16’s into some uncharacteristic decision making.

With the lead in hand, RSL U-16’s looked determined to extend the lead in the second half, but the Surf’s persistence paid off when a shot from outside the box took a nasty deflection and hit the RSL crossbar and dropped down for the equalizing goal. Fans and even the player looked stunned at what had just happened.

RSL pushed for the lead, but were thwarted time after time by a well organized Surf defense, who forced RSL to play to the wings. RSL cut in on numerous occasions from the wings, but their transition was poor and every pass or cross was either missed or played to the wrong player.

Surf didn’t threaten much after the goal and held 10-men behind the ball to hold on for the one point. It is just the third time this season the RSL U-16 team has dropped points.

Grande Sports Academy Real Salt Lake vs San Diego Surf - Dillion NinoCASA GRANDE, Ariz. – All four teams at the Grande Sports Academy will travel to neighboring states this weekend, as Real Salt Lake U-18/17 & U-16/15 will head to California to take on San Diego Surf and Nomads SC in USSDA play, while RSL-AZ U-18 & U-16 Elite will travel to Nevada to resume Far West Regional League Play. USSDA (Academy)

Real Salt Lake U-18/17, ranked #2 in the country by Top Drawer Soccer, is the current leader in the Southwest Division (8-1-3) and has conceded a U-18/17 league best seven goals. Through six matches on the road, RSL U-18/17 have won three, drew one, lost one and have outscored opponents 8-4. Eric Carbajal is the leading scorer with six goals. Jose Hernandez, Corey Baird and Sam Gleadle have all found the back of the net five times. Gleadle is the team leader with six assists, Hernandez has notched five assists. In the U-18/17s most recent match, they defeated Strikers FC 8-0 on January 25th with Gleadle scoring an Academy personal best four goals.

Earlier this year, RSL U-18/17 dropped their first and only points at home when San Diego Surf scored a equalizing goal in the 77th-minute on November 16th. This weekend will mark the first meeting between RSL and Nomads in the 2013-14 season.

In the U-16/15s most recent match, they defeated Strikers 2-1 on January 25th.

Earlier this year, RSL U-16/15 defeated San Diego Surf 2-0 on November 16th. This weekend will mark the first meeting between RSL and Nomads in the 2013-14 season.

Far West Regional League (RSL-AZ Elite)

The RSL-AZ U-18 & U-16 Elite teams will head up to Las Vegas this weekend for Far West Regional League play. RSL-AZ U-16 Elite will be looking to continue their impressive run of form, which has seen them win Desert Classic Tournament and Presidents Day Tournament U-16 age groups over the course of the previous two weekends. Through five matches in FWRL play, the U-16 Elite team has dropped four and won one match. U-16 FWRL standings here.

RSL-AZ U-18 Elite will be looking to climb the FWRL standings this weekend after finishing fourth in Presidents Day Tournament over Presidents Day weekend. Through four matches in FWRL play, the U-18 Elite team has won one match, drew another and dropped two. U-18 FWRL standings here.

Weekend Soccer Preview: RSL-AZ U-16 Elite set for 2014 Desert Classic Tournament

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake U-16 Elite - G.Cleverly - Alejandro ParraCASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake – Arizona U-16 Elite team will travel up to Phoenix on Saturday to participate in the 2014 Desert Classic Tournament, which will be held at Reach 11.

The U-16 Elite team wrapped up the 2013 calendar year with a impressive showing at the 2013 Nomads Thanksgiving Tournament in which they went undefeated in group play before they were eliminated in the quarterfinals. In three group matches, the U-16s won two, drew one and outscored opponents 5-2.

The U-16s will kick off the Desert Classic Tournament on Saturday morning at 8:30 against Tucson based TSA 98 Boys Blue and will then face Ahwatukee 98 Boys White later in the day at 1:15pm. The final match will be held on Sunday at 1:15pm against SC del Sol 98 Boys Anderson. Tournament schedule here.

Tournament Rules: Divisions will consist of one group of four teams. Each team will play the other three teams in its group for a total of three matches. Final standings shall be determined by the total points accumulated during this round robin play. There will be no Final

In group play, there will be no overtime matches. Standings in a group will be determined by the following:
• Maximum of 10 points per match
• Six points for a Win
• Three points for a Tie
• No points for a Loss
• One point for each goal scored up to a maximum of three per match.
• One point for a shutout Win
