Kostas Kotselas PK goal here
It took Real Salt Lake U18’s fifty-three minutes before the could find the back of the net and once they did the onslaught was on. Four second half goals helped RSL cruise to a 4-1 victory over Southwest Division foes Pateadores.
Amer Sasivarevic opened up the scoring when Kostas Kotselas headed a ball far post finding an unmarked Sasivarevic who headed it in. Four minutes later Pateadores were called for a hand ball in the box. Kostas Kotselas stepped up and converted the PK.
Coco Navarro, called up by RSL to play in a reserve league match on Monday, scored his 19th goal on the season in the 66th minute and Aidan Tucker, playing in his final academy game, scored his first goal of for the team in the 80th minute. Pateadores did score in the 73rd minute off of a counter but there was little doubt RSL U18’s dominated the game and the entire second half.
RSL played well in the first half but just couldn’t finish in the final third. Jose Hernandez, Trevor Hyman, Coco Navarro and Andrew Brody all had outstanding looks but shot’s were off target or blocked by the Pateadores GK.
One theme that did pick up near the end of the first half was the buildup of physicality between both teams. Four Pateadores players were shown a yellow card and one player was sent off in the 70th minute when he picked up his second yellow. As the Pateadores became way too concerned with the yellow’s, RSL kept their focus and moved on taking advantage of a Pateadores team that was unorganized.
The highlight of the game for the players was when Tucker, who was not named to the summer roster, scored the last goal in the game. Tucker has played in 6 academy games and was primarily used as an Elite team player where he scored double-digit goals this season.
With the victory, RSL U18’s are now 3 points behind LA Galaxy for first in the Southwest Division. They have also moved up to #9 in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs. They need to finish top 8 for secure the best playoff position.
Starting XI: Chase Bishov, Jason Eng, Justen Glad, Dillon Nino, Moises Rodriguez, Luis Lopez, Fito Ovalle, Bofo Saucedo, Damian German, Josh Doughty, Brooks LennonBench: Adam Ferguson, Alex Knox, Terrell Lowe, Miguel Martinez, Diego Silva, Elias Rieland, Miles Stray, Evan Waldrep

Luis Lopez free kick goal here
Real Salt Lake U16’s exhibited a little bit of a monkey see, monkey do attitude when taking on Pateadores this past weekend. Not wanting to be outdone by the older team, the U16’s also scored four goals against Pateadores and then claimed the bragging rights for the weekend by holding the opposition scoreless.
RSL took the lead in the 16th minute when Josh Doughty, back from participating with the Canadian U16 team, showcased some fancy footwork inside the box, passing to an unmarked Bofo Saucedo who scored his 14th goal of the season. Pateadores tried to answer back quickly but a big save from Chase Bishov kept the game scoreless. A Pateadores player broke free and Bishov ran out and smothered the ball before the Pateadores player could take a shot.
Damian German doubled RSL’s lead in the 40th minute when he fired a shot near post from a Brooks Lennon pass that was started by Josh Doughty.
Brooks Lennon then reclaimed his team lead in goals, 15 on the season, when he cut in from the wing. He touch two touches on the 18 and sent a curling ball far post. Two minutes later in the 66th minute Luis Lopez stepped up and converted a free kick from 22 yards out. His first goal on the season.
Pateadores showed signs of life in the 73rd minute when a turnover in the midfield by RSL led to a counter. Outstanding defense by Dillon Nino and Jason Eng slowed down the counter which resulted in a weak shot outside the 18. Pateadores had another chance minutes later but back-to-back saves from ‘keeper Miguel Martinez kept the game scoreless preserving the 4 goal lead.
With the victory, RSL has now clinched second in the Southwest Division. U16’s also did not improve their playoff chances and will most likely be in the second pot for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs which means they will have to take on a top 8 team.
Real Salt Lake Academy U16 defeated Pateadores, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Grande Sports World. Goals were scored by: Brooks Lennon, Bofo Saucedo, Damian German and Luis Lopez. Lopez’s goal was his first of the season. Check out the video of his beautiful free kick here.

On Thursday night (5/9/13), coaches divided up the U18 and U16 teams into a mini-round-robin-tournament. On the U18 side Elijah Evans, Jonathan Stadler, Brandon Johnston, Danny Gavin, Luis Barraza, Jose “Bean” Vasquez, Diego Silva and Jose Hernandez easily won without any extra time or PK’s needed in their final game.
On the U16 side, things were a little different. The “orange” and “blue” team both went into the final game with a 2-0 record. Neither team could score in regular time so the coaches made the players take PK’s. Below is the video from this.
Excellent commentary provided by Aaron Herrea, Coach Tony Bruce, Chase Bishov, Patrico Cevallos and Brandon Sands throughout the PK’s.

It has come down to just a few games left for playoff positioning and RSL, third place in Southwest Division, needed a big weekend to overcome second place Real So Cal and first place Chivas USA. And with the first game against Chivas USA, RSL looked to start things off on the right foot.
RSL however started things off on the wrong foot when in the 8th minute thy went down a goal due to a poor defensive pass out of the back that left everyone out of position. Two minutes later RSL answered back when Damian German played a ball up to Brooks Lennon from a quick restart on a free kick. Brooks wasted no time and tucked it away into the far post equalizing the game.
RSL then looked a little more inspired and started to play better, but poor passing in the final third held them back. Chivas USA looked to grab the lead in the 22nd minute but were stopped by Dillion Nino who prevented a goal when he cleared a dangerous ball. Chivas USA kept applying pressure and they grabbed the next goal in the 27th minute and another in the 35th minute to go into the half with a 3-1 lead. The two goals being scored off of defensive mistakes that turned into counter attacks.
Chivas USA wasted no time in the second half scoring again in the 42nd minute. RSL went to their bench and brought on players Evan Waldrep, Aaron Herrea and Alex Knox who greatly improved RSL’s chances with some physical play and crisp passing. Their hard work paid off when Knox got tackled from behind in the box after receiving a Herrera pass. Knox stepped up and converted the goal. His second on the season.
RSL didn’t have much left after this and a crucial clearance by Herrea kept the game at 4-2 which ended minutes later.

After losing to Chivas USA, the game against Galaxy wasn’t a must win but the players acted as if it was. Three points would keep their chances alive for a top 2 spot in the Southwest Division and no points would greatly ruin any chance for a late season push with just 2 games remaining after the Galaxy match.
Both teams spent the majority of the first half kicking the ball around. Moises Rodriguez, back at LB for the second time this season, impressed early on stopping many Galaxy attacks on the wing. RSL had two chances on goal in the first half the first coming in the 28th minute when Luis Lopez sent a ball through traffic that was deflected out and again in the 37th minute Brooks Lennon took a shot that went well wide. Other than these two chances there wasn’t much else for RSL in the first half.
RSL made three substitutions at the beginning of the second half bringing on Bofo Saucedo, Jason Eng and Alex Knox who all provided an immediate spark. In the 43rd minute Brooks Lennon played a ball into Damian German who took a touch and fired over the net. RSL had a huge opportunity saved in the 55th minute from a corner. The ball sailed to the top pf the 18 and Dillion Nino headed it back into the box. Justen Glad then headed it far post and the Galaxy GK made a diving save pushing it out to keep the game scoreless.
RSl continued to apply pressure and it finally paid off in the 69th minute when Fito Ovalle forced a turnover in the Galaxy half. He then sent a looping ball to Brooks Lennon who dribbled into the box slotting it to the right giving RSL the lead. Moments later RSL doubled their lead when Damian German sent a free kick up to Lennon. He collected the ball and and shot far post giving RSL the 2-0 lead.
With the lead in hand RSL had to play some stellar defense and GK Chase Bishov had quite the performance in the final minutes. A PK was called against RSL in the 73rd minute. Bishov saved the shot and no one on RSL cleared the ball which gave a Galaxy player ample time to collected himself and score. Bishov then made made three more saves to keep RSL on top which gave them the 2-1 victory over Galaxy.

The last time these two teams faced each other six weeks ago, Rea Salt Lakes’s inability to finish chances allowed Real So Cal hang around long enough to grab a victory late. On Sunday, RSL made sure this wasn’t the case again.

Carrillo took a step back and perfectly timed the tackle ending the So Cal threat. RSL scored their third goal in the 35th minute when Navarro took a shot that was saved by the So Cal GK. The ball bounced right and Brody picked it up and finished.
RSL’s last goal came two minutes later when Jose Hernandez, from Brody, inside the box shot high over the ‘Keepers outstretched arms.

With only three points in their last three games RSL needed a victory over Real So Cal to keep pace in the Southwest Division with the leaders.
After a slow start for both teams things started to get very active at the 18th minute. Real So Cal had their first shot on goal when their counter attack was foiled by RSL’s ability to get numbers behind the ball. The weak shot didn’t threaten Chase Bishov who then quickly bounced up and threw a ball forward that led to a RSL counter. Bofo Saucedo then beat the So Cal GK and took a shot that traveled across the face of goal hitting the post and bouncing out.
Saucedo became constant threat on So Cal’s defense after this. He has another shot in the 23rd minute saved and looked as if he was taken down in the box in the 29th minute which was not called. Saucedo continued to work hard and grabbed the goal he had been searching for in the 37th minute. The assist goes to Jason Eng who was helped by Evan Waldrep who had been a force over the last 15 minutes in the midfield. CB’s Justen Glad and Dillion Nino also had a tremendous day holding down the backline.
After the restart in the second half RSL didn’t miss a beat as they continued to create chances. Brooks Lennon had the best opportunity when he cut into the box got tripped up and took a shot. It looked as it Lennon was going to fall but coaches praised him for his strength and toughness by staying up.
As time was close to expiring So Cal push forward for the equalizing goal but they were deterred by RSL’s strong defensive showing.
With the victory Real Salt Lake is now 2 points behind Real So Cal for second place in the Southwest Division.
Next game for RSL is on Saturday vs Chivas USA in Los Angeles.
