CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – It’s another busy weekend for the Grande Sports Academy home of the Real Salt Lake Academy, as the U-16 and U-18 Academy teams will host Pateadores on Saturday, while the U-16 and U-18 Elite teams will compete in Far West Regional League Play.

The Real Salt Lake U-18 team’s five match winning streak came to an end last week when the 10-men Claret-and-Cobalt conceded a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw with the San Diego Surf. Before the draw, RSL was the only team in the nation to not drop any points. They are now one of six U-18 teams in the nation to not suffer a loss in league play. Niki Jackson continues to be a dominant force up front and leads the team in scoring with four goals. Jose Hernandez is second with three, while Brooks Lennon leads the team in assists with four. Co-captain and defender Erik Holt committed to UCLA last week.
In last week’s match against the Surf, RSL went down a man when Moises Rodriguez was shown a straight red for a mistimed tackle in the 18th-minute. Even though RSL was down a man they continued to dominate possession and scored the opening goal on a Jackson cross to Hernandez on the back post for an easy header moments before the halftime break. RSL had a few more chances in the second half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Surf countered in the 77th-minute and finished a cross-and-volley for the equalizer.
The Claret-and-Cobalt face a Pateadores side, who is 5th in the Southwest Division with a 2-2-1 record. In the Pateadores most recent match, they lost to Real So Cal 2-0 on November 16th.
The Real Salt Lake U-16 team has been perfect at home this season through three matches. They have outscored opponents 11-0 and have won all three including the latest on November 26th against the San Diego Surf. The U-16s lead the Southwest Division and are scoring on average four goals per match. Sebastian Saucedo leads the team in scoring with five, while Josh Doughty and Miles Stray both have four. Goalkeeper Christian Herrera has earned four clean sheets and is on a currently on a three-match clean sheet streak.
In last week’s match against the Surf, first half goals by Diego “Diablo” Silva and Saucedo carried the Claret-and-Cobalt to a 2-0 win. The U-16s face a Pateadores side, who is 4th in the Southwest Division with a 3-2-1 record. In the Pateadores most recent match, they lost to Real So Cal 2-0 on November 16th.
The U-18s play first at 10:00 a.m., which will be followed by the U-16 match at 12:30 p.m.
Elite
The Real Salt Lake U-16 and U-18 Elite teams will be playing local and out of state teams this weekend in Far West Regional League Play. The U-16s kept their postseason chances alive with a dramatic come from behind victory against TSA Red on Sunday. They scored two goals in the second half and captured their first victory through five matches in FWRL play. This weekend they face Nevada side LVSA 98 Boys Red, who has yet to play a FWRL match, on Saturday, 3:00 PM at Fear Farm in Phoenix.
The U-18 Elite team needs a strong showing this weekend to get back into the discussion for postseason play. They have picked up one point through three matches and face TSA Red, who have also picked up one point through three matches, on Friday night. On Sunday the U-18s will travel to Phoenix and face Nevada side LVSA, who have yet to play a FWRL match.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-18 team saw their five match winning streak come to an end when the San Diego Surf scored a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw on Saturday morning at the Grande Sports Academy. The draw has also ended the Claret-and-Cobalt’s perfect point streak, as this is the first match RSL has dropped points in.

Playing with 10-men for over 70 minutes, due to a straight red card shown to Moises Rodriguez on a tough tackle, RSL were able to capture the lead moments before the halftime break when Niki Jackson broke through the Surf defense on the left side. As he dribbled into the box two Surf defenders left the middle of the box open as they ran over to cut off Jackson. He looked up and chipped a ball over the defenders to a streaking Jose Hernandez who finished with a header.
RSL continued to push the effort in the second half and had multiple opportunities in the final third, but just couldn’t find the right combination that would lead to a second goal. As they pushed the goal seemed to be further and further away, which gave the Surf enough confidence to counter in the 76th-minute and finish a cross-and-volley. The Surf’s confidence hit a high match, which almost propelled to three-points if it was not for goalkeeper Chase Bishov, who ran out and batted a cross down and smothered the ball while diving head first into traffic. Second-half substitute Sam Gleadle had RSL’s final chance when he made a diagonal run to the right-wing. He caught up to the ball and fired a shot for the back post that clipped a Surf’s defenders leg and casually rolled to the goalkeeper for an easy save.
Through six matches the RSL U-18 team is undefeated and leads the Southwest Division with sixteen points.
The opening minutes of the first half went in RSL’s favor as Corey Baird, Brooks Lennon and Jackson abused the Surf defense down the right flank. However, in the 17th-minute RSL played a corner into the box. It was cleared and bounced into empty space. A Surf player sprinted for the ball as got a touch just moments before Rodriguez slide in. Rodriguez clipped the Surf player and was shown a straight red for the challenge.
RSL’s response to playing down a man was almost perfect. Corey Baird became a one-man wrecking crew in the midfield. Jack Gayton provided service from the back and center-back paring, Santi Carrillo and Erik Holt, won everything in the air. The positive play paid off when Jackson and Hernandez connected.
The second half was a mirror image of the first. RSL’s defense was strong and the attack was always with purpose. The best chance to RSL came in the 71st-minute when Damian German dribbled and cut hit was through the Surf defense. He created space for himself on top of the 18 and fired for the back post, but unfortunately pushed the ball a tad too far.
It was a tough result for RSL, who are one of six teams in the nation to remain unbeaten.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-18 Academy team extended their match winning streak to five following a three-goal second half effort, which propelled the Claret-and-Cobalt to a 4-1 win over Arsenal FC on Saturday morning at the Grande Sports Academy.

After a poor first half from Real Salt Lake, which saw them trade goals with Arsenal, Jose Hernandez broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half when sustained pressure by RSL created a turnover in Arsenal’s final third. Corey Baird collected the loose ball and passed to a streaking Hernandez, who hammered the ball into the back of net for what would become the match-winning goal.
The home side extended their lead ten-minutes later when Niki Jackson scored his fourth-goal in as many matches when he finished a Brooks Lennon cross. Eric Carbajal scored RSL’s fourth goal and final goal when he and Sam Gleadle combined for a four-pass sequence in the 81st-minute.
Real Salt Lake had difficulties cracking Arsenal’s 10-man defense in the opening minutes and were limited to shots just outside of the 18. Hernandez had RSL’s best effort in the 12th-minute when he cut and sliced his way into the box and scooted a shot near post, which was saved. Arsenal surprised RSL and scored the opening goal in the 20th-minute when their forwards pounced on an errant pass and finished the effort. Luis “Wicho” Barraza made a momentum shifting save moments after the opening goal when he ran out and smothered what looked to be Arsenal’s second goal.
RSL started to attack with purpose and was on the fortunate end of a deflection in the 29th-minute when Lennon sent in a low-cross that bounced out to a unmarked Corey Baird, who finished inside the box for his second goal on the season. Barraza came up big yet again after the equalizing goal making a double-save in the 31st-minute. He stopped the first shot with an extended left leg. He jumped up, raced back into the net and made a diving save to his right. RSL had a few more opportunities before the break, but couldn’t put a shot on frame as two dangerous looks sailed over the crossbar.
The Claret-and-Cobalt’s breakout in the second half has been an ongoing occurrence all season. The RSL U-18 team has scored four goals in the first half and has scored ten goals in the second half through five matches. RSL has been riding these second half performances to a first place spot in the Southwest Division. They are also the only team in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy league to not drop any points this season.
The Real Salt Lake U-18 team will stay home again this weekend when they host San Diego Surf on November, 16th; kickoff set for 10:00 a.m.
