RSL U-16 Elite team defeat TSA 3-2 for first win in FWRL

Grande News, Performance News, Real Salt Lake, Soccer Academy

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-16 Elite team came from behind and scored two goals in the second half on Sunday at the Grande Sports Academy, which propelled the Claret-and-Cobalt to a 3-2 win over TSA Red for their first points in the Far West Regional League.

The RSL U-16 Elite team went down a goal early when the defense tried to play it out of the back. A TSA player intercepted a pass and finished the effort for the opening goal. RSL scored equalizer minutes later when Erik “Gallo” Virgen whipped in a cross from a corner. The TSA goalkeeper ran out and mistimed his jump. His fingers got a touch, but the ball had too much pace and curved into the goal.

As RSL was busy celebrating the equalizer, TSA pushed down the right flank with urgency. Poor marking allowed a TSA player to send in a cross to an unmarked teammate, who finished the effort.

After some halftime adjustments, RSL found new life and scored another equalizer when Gallo played a ball up to Diego Robles. He trapped the ball with his chest, brought it down to his feet and slotted it near post. Robles continued to abuse the TSA defense and with 10 minutes left he rifled a shot at the goalkeeper, who made a diving save to his right. The ‘keeper wasn’t able to clear it and an opportunistic Gio Alcocer pounced on the ball and finished for the match winning goal.

Through five FWRL matches, the Real Salt Lake U-16 Elite team is 1-4.

Match Recap & Photo Gallery: RSL U-16 Elite drop FWRL match to SC del Sol

Grande News, Performance News, Real Salt Lake, Soccer Academy

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-16 Elite team squandered a two goal lead and fell to SC del Sol 3-2 in the Far West Regional League on Wednesday night at Rose Mofford.

The Claret-and-Cobalt dominated play for 47 minutes and looked as if they would be on track to win their first match in FWRL play. However, a soft goal given up just moments after Ryan Flood doubled the lead for RSL shifted the momentum, which enabled SC del Sol to score the equalizer just three minutes after SC del Sol cut the deficit. SC del Sol continued to pound the RSL goal with a wide range of shots, but were deterred by the play of goalkeeper Conor Orton, who made two goal saving saves in the final ten minutes. His efforts in-goal would go to waste, as SC del Sol countered in the 79th-minute and scored the match winner from a cross-and-header.

The loss is another unfortunate setback for the Real Salt Lake U-16 Elite team, who is winless through four matches in FWRL play.

Things started off well for the U-16s, who just won the Arizona State League Division II title on Sunday. Before the title-winning match, RSL coaches moved Javi Avelar to a holding midfield position, to pair up with Duncan Storey, and the switch is already paying dividends. In the 13th-minute Avelar cut into the box on the left-side and flung a cross headed to the back post for a streaking Josh Allison, who finished from close range.

Gio Alcocer continued to push the effort for RSL with excellent play and possession in the midfield, while the defense, which was under pressure the entire first half, kept the SC del Sol attack at bay.

RSL doubled their lead in the 47th-minute, when Chris Fourcand collected a long cross on the right-wing. He turned and passed to Diego Robles on the 18, who took a touch forward and fired a shot that hit the far post and bounced out to a waiting Flood.

The second goal woke up SC del Sol who attacked the RSL defense without mercy. RSL has a few chances late when the match was tied up, but missed crosses plagued RSL in the final third, who was never able to recover once SC del Sol scored.

U-16 Elite

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake U-16 Elite - G.Cleverly - Gallo (3) The U-16 Elite team dominated their age group, but had one unfortunate hiccup on Saturday morning when Fubolito Bimbo Fuente Azul 98 defeated the Claret-and-Cobalt 4-2 in a physical match. Midway through the second half and trailing by two goals, Javi Avelar cut the deficit when he converted a penalty, however, Fuente Azul scored two more minutes and held on for the win. Robby Orona added a late goal for RSL.

On Sunday, the U-16 Elite team needed just a draw to win the Division II title and playing against Ahwatukee 98 White, the Claret-and-Cobalt came out aggressive and pounded Ahwatukee down the right-wing. It paid dividends in the 20th-minute when Gallo played a diagonal ball to Javi Avelar. Avelar continued his run and sent a low cross that headed to the back post for a waiting Austin Tucker, who calmly finished. Diego Robles added a late insurance goal in the 77th-minute when he beat the last defender with pace and finished the effort.

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake U-18 Elite- G.Cleverly - Radu Marcu, Danny Moreno, Paul Bin, Miguel Martinez (3) The RSL U-18 Elite team went undefeated in Arizona State League play and finished second in their Division after earning two draws this past weekend. On Saturday, Tevin Lowe scored the lone goal for the U-18s in a 1-1 draw with AZ Inferno 96,. The draw meant that the Claret-and-Cobalt could not drop points to their Sunday opponent Sereno South White, who had not given up a goal in six matches.

Seven minutes into the match, Nate Deaton bombed a diagonal ball forward to Paul Bin, who surprised the Sereno defense with his pace. He ran up to the ball, dribbled into the box and rounded the goalkeeper for the opening goal. Moments after the goal Sereno attacked the RSL defense with purpose and earned a free kick from the wing in the 10th minute. Service came in and was deflected towards to the RSL goal where an unmarked Sereno forward was waiting for an easy tap in. Both sides knocked the ball around for the remainder of the match and in the dying minutes it looked like Sereno was going to go up a goal when the RSL defense was caught on the counter, but Nicholas LaMonica made a goal line clearance in the 80th-minute to preserve the draw.
