CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – A stout defensive performance and a second half flurry of goals helped the Real Salt Lake U-16 team cruise to a 6-0 victory over Arsenal on Saturday afternoon at the Grande Sports Academy. Sebastian “Bofo” Saucedo and Miles Stray scored goals on both sides of the half while Justen Glad added a brace in the final minutes, as the defense recorded their third shutout through five matches.

Real Salt Lake kept the Arsenal defense on their heels for the majority of the first half, however, it took the Claret-and-Cobalt 36 minutes before they cracked the stingy Arsenal defense. Sacuedo cut though and lofted a ball over the last defender while Stray ran up and hammered the back into the back of net. After this, the onslaught was on. RSL added one more before the half when Tate Schmitt was taken down from behind inside the box. Saucedo stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to the right.
Fourteen minutes in the second half, Diego “Diablo” Silva made one of his patent runs down the wing and cut into the box with blistering pace. As the Arsenal defense pinched in to cut him off, Silva then passed to the top of the box where an unmarked Stray was waiting, who calmly finished for his team high fourth goal.
RSL’s offense continued to push the effort and scored their fourth goal in the 70th-minute when Saucedo played a ball into the box from a corner. The ball took a few deflections and squirted out to Glad, who flung his body around with finished with his left foot. Glad added his second on the season four minutes later when he directed a header to the far post from a Tyler Feeley cross. Saucedo scored RSL’s final goal in the 76th-minute when he dribbled into the box and finished.
Through five matches, the Real Salt Lake U-16 Academy team has outscored opponents 22-3 and is currently in first place in the Southwest Division.

Eager to shake off a rare loss in their previous Academy match, Sebastian Saucedo attacked the Real So Cal defense with urgency in the 2nd minute from the right-wing and had his feet taken out from under him inside the box. Saucedo stepped up and calmly converted the penalty kick for the opening goal.
The Claret-and-Cobalt continued to dominate the match after the goal and kept possession in their opponents half for the majority of the match. Real So Cal crossed the half a few times, but it was for moments, as the Real Salt Lake defense swarmed and stopped every attempt.
Minutes after the halftime break coaches went to the bench and brought on Tate Schmitt and Danny Acosta. Coaches changed the formation and went with two forwards, sending Miles Stray up top to partner with Saucedo. The switch paid off minutes later when Schmitt whipped in a cross, which was headed for the back post for Stray, who finished with a powerful header.
Stray doubled his tally in the 61st minute when he headed in another cross, this time from Josh Doughty. RSL closed out with match with a few more shots from Jesus Avelar, Danny Acosta and Evan Waldrep, which were on target, but all saved. Fito Ovalle and Justen Glad contributed to a stout defensive performance, which gave RSL their second clean sheet in four matches.
