Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake -CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Season stats for the Grande Sports Academy are listed below.

Real Salt Lake U-15/16 & U-17/18 Academy teams are the current leaders in the Southwest Division for their respective age groups.

The RSL-AZ U-16 & U-18 Elite teams have shown well in all competitions this season. The U-16s & U-18s won promotion to Division I of the Arizona State League in the fall. In February, U-16s won back-to-back tournaments: 2014 Desert Classic (Feb. 7-9) and Presidents Day Tournament (Feb. 14-17).

Real Salt Lake U-17/18 defeat San Jose Earthquakes U-17/18 in thrilling second half comeback

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake - Moises Rodriguez (2)DANVILLE, Calif. – Trailing for the majority of the match, goals from Luis Lopez and Corey Baird in the final twenty minutes preserved Real Salt Lake U-17/18’s winning streak which is now at a season high of seven matches.

RSL equalzied the match in the 70th-minute on a fortunate defensive blunder by a San Jose Earthquakes defender. Damian German charged down the right-wing and crossed to Baird, who made a run up the middle. The ball bounced between the defender’s legs and popped out to Baird, who then chipped the ‘keeper.

Twelve minutes later, Lopez finished a brilliant free kick from just outside the 18 for his second goal in as many matches.

San Jose pushed for the equalizer in the final minutes by lofting balls over the top. RSL held on and preserved their perfect start to 2014.

Fifteen minutes into the match, San Jose caught RSL’s defense in a bad position. A rebound bounced out of the box and ended up down the wing. A San Jose player whipped in a cross to the backpost where a handful of unmarked Earthquakes players were waiting. RSL goalkeeper Luis Barraza ran out to intercept the cross, but missed it before an San Jose player scored the opening goal.

Things changed for RSL at the start of the second half when Gui Leme and Matthias Binder were brought on. The Claret-and-Cobalt started to connect and touch the ball more, playing their game.

RSL U-17/18 will put their wining streak to the test this upcoming weekend against Seattle Sounders U-17/18 who are currently in second in the Northwest Division. Match kicks off at 11:00 AM at the Grande Sports World.

Real Salt Lake U-17/18 defeat Santa Cruz Breakers Academy U-17/18, extends win streak to six

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake - Corey Baird (3)APTOS, Calif. – Six U-17/18 Real Salt Lake Academy players combined for six goals in a win over Santa Cruz Breakers U-17/18 Academy on Saturday afternoon in Aptos, California. The victory has extended the Claret-and-Cobalt’s winning streak to six matches, surpassing the previous season high of five matches.

Jose Hernandez opened up RSL’s scoring account in the 7th-minute on a brilliantly executed combination between he and Gui Leme. After receiving a pass near the top of the box from Leme, Hernandez cut inside and dribbled through three defenders before he juked the Santa Cruz goalkeeper and finished far post.

RSL then scored three goals in quick succession, the first from Eric Carbajal, who notched his 12th goal to date in the 21st-minute from a Te Wihongi cross. Luis Lopez found the back of the net in the 26th-minute on a beautifully curled free kick for his first goal on the season. Corey Baird scored two minutes later for his seventh goal all year.

After the halftime break, the Claret-and-Cobalt scored their fifth goal midway through the second half when Sam Gleadle found the back of the net for his eighth goal in six matches. Luke Novick closed out RSL’s impressive victory with an 89th-minute goal, his first all year. Matthias Binder passed to ball to Novick, who was unmarked near the penalty spot. He then took a touch and blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in.

Santa Cruz found the back of the net once in the 33rd-minute.

RSL U-17/18 will stay in California to face MLS rival Academy San Jose Earthquakes U-17/18 on Sunday at 11:00 AM.

Grande Sports Academy - Rodriguez, Barraza, Fuchs, Cann, Baird, Acosta, Fourcand, Saucedo, Hernandez, Binder, Wihongi, Stray (2)CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – On Wednesday morning, twelve Grande Sports Academy student-athletes volunteered at Oasis Pavilion Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Spring Carnival. The participating GSA volunteers were paired up at different stages and helped in various games.

The GSA student-athletes helped the residents in eight different games that included: basketball throw, duck fishing, putt-putt golf, lollipop pick, ring toss, cornhole, toilet paper toss, three-bucket toss and sticker grab. One resident gave away palm readings, and a handful of the GSA participants enthusiastically had their palms read.

Student attendees: Danny Acosta, Corey Baird, Luis Barraza, Matthias Binder, Kiuno Cann, Kris Fourcand, Leo Fuchs, Jose Hernandez, Moises Rodriguez, Sebastian Saucedo, Miles Stray, and Te Wihongi.

Grande Sports Academy - Matthias Binder“It was very helpful because we had one in the fall and it was basically our volunteers and the employees,” said Tammy Nite,   “It worked out well because it’s not as busy as before and the residents look forward to meeting to new people. They get excited about it and were very thankful to have the GSA players here.”

Near the end of the carnival one resident challenged two of our student-athletes to an arm-wrestling contest and won both attempts. Senior Corey Baird, future Stanford University men’s soccer midfielder and current member of the “GSA 4.0 GPA Club”, spoke highly of the event saying, “I’m just really happy to be here with all my teammates and it feels really good to give back to the community. It brings us all together to do something good in helping out people.”

Real Salt Lake U-18 beats Chivas USA U-18, extends win streak to five

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake -CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Eric Carbajal and the Real Salt Lake U-18 Academy team showed no signs of slowing down in four goal shutout win over Southwest Division rivals Chivas USA U-18 on Saturday afternoon at the Grande Sports World.

Carbajal extended his team high in goals scored to eleven with a first half brace, while Te Wihongi and Adam Ferguson scored in the second half. RSL U-18 has won all five matches played in 2014, and is undefeated in their last six matches.

The Claret-and-Cobalt opened up their goal tally in the 18th-minute on a calmly converted penalty kick from Carbajal, which was earned by Sam Gleadle after he was taken down in the box from behind. Gleadle had a hand in RSL’s second goal four minutes later when his shot from a Jose Hernandez cross was deflected out by the Chivas goalkeeper. Carbajal acted quickly, recovered the loose ball and tapped in his seventh goal in four matches played.

Dillon Nino, Justen Glad and Moises Rodriguez provided some key stops near the end of the first half and a big 1v1 save by Luis Barraza in the 40th-minute held Chivas USA scoreless going into the break.

Five minutes into the second half, Wihongi scored RSL’s third goal when he redirected a Rodriguez cross from the right-wing into an empty net.

At the hour mark, Chivas USA went down a man after a player was shown a straight red on a dangerous challenge near the halfway line. With the man advantage, RSL brought on Gui Leme, who abused the Chivas defense with his pace. Leme would have added to RSL’s lead if it was not for the inspired play by the Goats goalkeeper, who made back-to-back saves from close range in the 71st-minute.

Grande Sports Academy - Real Salt Lake - Justen GladLeme continued to push the attack and assisted on RSL’s fourth goal when he played a ball to the top of the box from the left-wing. Ferguson took a touch and fired a low shot into the left-side netting for his first career academy goal.

Shots in the closing minutes by Leme and Grant Livingston were saved, but as RSL’s pushed for a fifth goal they were exposed defensively. The Goats countered in the 89th-minute and another big stop by Barraza on a 1v1 gave preserved RSL’s fourth shutout in seven matches at home.

RSL will travel to California next week to play Santa Cruz Breakers Academy on Saturday and San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday.
