Weekend Soccer Preview: Real Salt Lake Academy set to host Chivas USA

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-16 & U-18 Academy teams are set to kickoff a busy March schedule against Southwest Division rivals Chivas USA U-16 & U-18 Academy on Saturday, March 8th, at the Grande Sports World.

The U-18 match is set to begin at 3:00 PM and will be followed by the U-16 match at 5:30 PM.

Real Salt Lake U-17/18, ranked #2 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer, is the current leader in the Southwest Division with a 10-1-3 record and has conceded a U-17/18 league best ten goals. Through six matches at home, RSL U-17/18 has won five matches, drew one and has outscored opponents 26-3. Eric Carbajal is the team leader in goals scored with nine and is followed by Sam Gleadle with seven. Jose Hernandez and Corey Baird have found the back of the net five times. Carbajal, Gleadle and Hernandez are all tied for the team lead with five assists each. In their most recent match, the U-17/18s defeated Nomads SC 3-2 on February 23rd with Gleadle recording a brace and Carbajal adding one.

In the previous matchup between these two sides, RSL U-17/18 defeated Chivas USA 2-0 in Los Angeles on October 5th. Chivas USA is currently holding the third position in the Southwest Division with a 10-4-4 record through 18 matches.

Real Salt Lake U-15/16, ranked #3 in the country by Top Drawer Soccer, is the current leader in the Southwest Division with an 11-1-2 record and is tied for the league high in goal difference with +37; 43 goals scored and 6 goals conceded. RSL U-15/16 has won all six matches played at home this year outscoring opponents 20-1. Sebastian Saucedo leads the team in scoring with 12 goals and is followed by Josh Doughty and Tate Schmitt, who have recorded five each. In their most recent match, the U-15/16s defeated Nomads SC 2-0. Evan Waldrep and Saucedo scored for the Claret-and-Cobalt.

In the previous matchup between the two sides, RSL U-15/16 defeated Chivas USA 3-1 in Los Angeles on October 5th. Chivas USA is currently holding the fifth position in the Southwest Division with a 7-6-5 record through 18 matches.

Justen Glad invited by Real Salt Lake to participate in Desert Diamond Cup

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Real Salt Lake U-16 Academy defender Justen Glad has been invited by the senior team to participate in the fourth annual Desert Diamond Cup, which is a preseason soccer tournament hosted by USL Premier Development League team, FC Tucson.

The Claret-and-Cobalt will be marking their third appearance in this year’s edition where they will be competing against five other clubs: Chicago Fire, Colorado Rapids, New England Revolution, Chivas USA and tournament hosts FC Tucson.

Glad will join his former Grande Sports Academy teammates: Carlos Salcedo, Jordan Allen, Benji Lopez and Lalo Fernandez, who have all signed professional contract with RSL.

The schedule for the DDC is below. RSL’s matches on February 22nd and 26th will be streamed on realsaltlake.com and MLSsoccer.com

Grande Sports Academy, Casa Grande, AZ – Grande Sports Academy student-athlete and RSL-AZ forward, Sebastian Saucedo, is named United States Soccer Development Academy Week 4 ‘Player of the Week’ on October 4, 2012. Saucedo received the award for his performance during Real Salt Lake – Arizona U-15/16 soccer academy team overwhelming 7-2 win over Chivas USA Academy last Saturday, September 29, 2012.

Saucedo found the back of the goal at the 24th, 35th, and 48th minute to secure his hat-trick for the match. Saucedo who is a U15 National pool player scored on a penalty-kick, a free-kick, and off a great team combination play as RSL-AZ continued to pressed the ball on the Chivas USA’s side of the pitch throughout the game. The USSDA 2012-13 season is just a month into its schedule and Saucedo’s 5 goals in three matches is currently tied with the most goals in the U-15/16 Division.

The RSL-AZ U-15/16 soccer academy is currently 3-0-0 and is leading the Southwest Division of the USSDA West Conference. RSL-AZ team is playing inspired soccer on the pitch as they average 3.7 goals per game while only giving up one goal per game.

RSL-AZ soccer academy is part of the Grande Sports Academy family of full-time residency academies. RSL-AZ’s next matches are scheduled for October 13th and 14th as the team goes on the road for the first time this season. Match time for the October 13th for the U-17/18 team is at 9:30am PST and the U-15/16 team is at 11:30am PST against the San Diego Surfs. The October 14th games begin with the U-17/18 team @ 12:00pm PST and the U-15/16 team @ 2:00pm PST against the Nomads SC.

RSL-AZ Soccer Academy Remains Unbeaten After Division Match with Chivas USA Academy

Grande Sports Academy, Casa Grande, AZ – Grande Sports World was the location for Saturdays match-up of Real Salt Lake – Arizona soccer academy against the visiting Chivas USA Academy U16 and U18 teams. Each team continues to develop a fierce rivalry as they compete in the Southwest Division of the United States Soccer Development Academy’s West Conference. The heat of the Arizona desert was the perfect place to see two of the conferences top teams lay their strikes from the pitch.

The first match of the day resulted in RSL-AZ and Chivas USA Academy U18 teams playing to a nil-nil draw. The aggressive play for possession over 90 minutes of match-play only provided a few opportunities for each squad. The RSL-AZ squad was without USSDA U16 2011-12 Player of the Year Jordan Allen and forward Andrew Brody. Brody will be sidelined for the next eight weeks due to a broken foot suffered in last weeks match against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Benji Lopez did return to the team from a month long absence after competing for the US U18 Mens National Soccer Team in Holland.

Spectators attending the second game between the U16 squads witnessed screaming soccer balls streaming into a goal-fest match. Field play of both RSL-AZ and Chivas USA was evenly matched nil-nil until the 19th minute of the first half when Justen Glad headed a cross from Damian German for the first goal. Three minutes later RSL-AZ was up 2-nil on a penalty kick by forward Sebastian Saucedo. Moments later, Jason Eng delivered a beautiful cross which enabled Brooks Lennon to connect on a close range header for a 3-0 lead. Sebastian Saucedo in the traditional home red RSL-AZ jersey tagged his second goal of the day with a free kick before Chivas USA finally tallied a goal to make the score 4-1 before the half.

Pleased with the first half, RSL-AZ Director of Coaching Martin Vasquez, encouraged the team to continue its aggressive play on the opponents side of the field. Vazquez instructions were followed as Saucedo scored his hat-trick off a great combination play by the team and Josh Doughty’s goal in the 13th minute of the second half. Doughty’s goal came as he lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper from a high-quality ball placed by Fito Ovalle. With the score 6-1, Chivas USA added their second goal of the day on a defensive misque by RSL-AZ. Glad headed his second goal of the match as he out-jumped two Chivas USA players for the ball.

The RSL-AZ U18 and U16 teams’ unbeaten streak remain intact during the first three home games of the season. RSL-AZ travels to San Diego, CA on October 13th to challenge the San Diego Surfs and the Nomads SC on October 14th. The next home game for RSL-AZ is scheduled for October 20th against the Portland Timbers.

Real Salt Lake – Arizona Learns from a Difficult Weekend of Matches

Miserable weather conditions and less desirable play from Real Salt Lake- Arizona’s academy teams added up to a forgettable weekend in California, as Chivas USA came away with two victories and all six points. Real Salt Lake – Arizona’s under 18’s lost 1-0 and the under 16’s lost 3-1.

Real Salt Lake – Arizona under 18 squad started the game well consistently getting in behind the Chivas defense, but failed to convert several good chances.

Maikon Orellana had two great opportunities to put Real Salt Lake – Arizona academy in the lead. After rounding two defenders, Orellana drove the ball straight at the Chivas goalkeeper, who blocked the effort. Orellana then got in behind the Goats defense, waltzed around the keeper, but agonizingly watched his shot come off the near post and squirm across the goalmouth before being cleared by the Chivas defense.

Real Salt Lake – Arizona U18s continued their assault with Ricardo Velasco hitting the upright and then Etiandro Tavares, after beating his defender, watched his shot beat the goalie but crash off the crossbar and out of play.

The Real Salt Lake – Arizona academy had several more near makes before Chivas scored on a counter attack. After winning the ball deep in their own half, in the 43^rd minute, Chivas drove forward and crossed the ball across the face of the goal. Real Salt Lake – Arizona defender Jesus Dominguez turned the ball into his own net as he tried to clear his lines.

In the second half the game swung back and forth with both teams creating chances but the equalizer for Real Salt Lake – Arizona just would not come.

In the second game of the day, Real Salt Lake-Arizona’s under 16 team came out flat and went one behind early in the first half. Things did not improve as the game went on and the Real Salt Lake – Arizona outfit went three goals down. The only bright spot for Real Salt Lake – Arizona was a second half goal by Jose Navarro, who worked very hard all afternoon as he has done all season. Real Salt Lake- Arizona’s U16 team will have to use this game as learning tool if they plan on attending the Finals again this year.

Real Salt Lake – Arizona continues league play Saturday, April 14 with a game versus San Diego Surf and the following day versus Nomads, at the $20 million dollar Grande Sports World complex, in Casa Grande, Arizona.
