Justen Glad joins Real Salt Lake at Desert Diamond Cup

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Real Salt Lake Academy defender Justen Glad has been invited by Real Salt Lake to participate in the fourth annual Desert Diamond Cup, which is a preseason soccer tournament hosted by USL Premier Development League team, FC Tucson.

The Claret-and-Cobalt will be marking their third appearance in this year’s edition where they will be competing against five other clubs: Chicago Fire, Colorado Rapids, New England Revolution, Chivas USA and tournament hosts FC Tucson.

Glad will join former Grande Sports Academy alumni: Carlos Salcedo, Jordan Allen, Benji Lopez and Lalo Fernandez, who have all signed a professional contract with RSL.

The schedule for the DDC is below. Matches will be streamed on realsaltlake.com and MLSsoccer.com.

RSL is currently in fifth place and depending on results will play Saturday at 1:00 or 3:30 PM.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Grande Sports Academy Exports is a feature in which we track the progress of former Grande Sports Academy players who are playing professionally. There are currently nine professional players in five different countries that have ties to the Grande Sports Academy. GSA Exports will track players who have been called up to national team duty and Real Salt Lake Reserve League matches.

NOTE: Nico Muñiz originally signed with RSL, and is without a team. Romain Gall has signed a youth contract with FC Lorient.

Preseason

Justen Glad, RSL-AZ U-16: Glad has been invited by Real Salt Lake to participate in the Desert Diamond Cup, which is being held in Tucson. Glad did not participate in RSL’s draw against New England Revolution on February 19th and missed RSL’s second match due to USSDA matches against San Diego Surf and Nomads SC this past weekend. Glad has rejoined RSL for their third match against FC Tucson on Wednesday and final match Saturday.

Real Salt Lake U-16 draw San Diego Surf U-16

DEL MAR, Calif. – Real Salt Lake U-16 is now undefeated in ten matches – dating back to October 27th – following their 1-1 draw with Southwest Division rivals San Diego Surf on Saturday afternoon.

Fresh off of its impressive 2013-14 Generation Adidas Cup group stage triumph, this saw the Claret-and-Cobalt win Central Region qualifying, RSL U-16 Academy team struggled for the majority of the match, but looked like they would walk away with three points.

Sebastian Saucedo broke the scoreless deadlock three minutes before the halftime break when Danny Acosta stripped a Surf player around the halfway line. He dribbled forward and played to Sebastian Saucedo, who took a touch and finished near post. It was a sigh of relief due to the less than impressive first half showing, which saw Surf control the majority of the match with an aggressive attack that forced RSL U-16’s into some uncharacteristic decision making.

With the lead in hand, RSL U-16’s looked determined to extend the lead in the second half, but the Surf’s persistence paid off when a shot from outside the box took a nasty deflection and hit the RSL crossbar and dropped down for the equalizing goal. Fans and even the player looked stunned at what had just happened.

RSL pushed for the lead, but were thwarted time after time by a well organized Surf defense, who forced RSL to play to the wings. RSL cut in on numerous occasions from the wings, but their transition was poor and every pass or cross was either missed or played to the wrong player.

Surf didn’t threaten much after the goal and held 10-men behind the ball to hold on for the one point. It is just the third time this season the RSL U-16 team has dropped points.

Glad will join his former Grande Sports Academy teammates: Carlos Salcedo, Jordan Allen, Benji Lopez and Lalo Fernandez, who have all signed professional contract with RSL.
