CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake – Arizona U-17/18 Academy team continued its winning ways at home in a 3-1 win over Southwest Division rivals Nomads SC on Sunday morning at the Grande Sports World. The victory has extended RSL-AZ U-17/18’s undefeated streak to 12 matches, one shy of the RSL-AZ Academy record of 13 set by the RSL-AZ U-15/16 team this season.
RSL-AZ U-17/18 jumped out to a great start and lit up the scoreboard in the 8th minute when Jose Hernandez curled a cross into the box from a corner. The ball was headed out to a waiting Dillon Nino, who then headed the ball back into the box. With his back to the net, Damian German shielded a Nomads defender, which allowed Te Wihongi to run up and smash the loose ball into the back of the net for his third goal all season.
Nomads SC U-17/18 started to garner for urgency as the half went on and tested RSL-AZ U-17/18 goalkeeper Chase Bishov on multiple occasions. The first was in the 15th minute when Bishov smothered a rifled shot from an unmarked Nomads player. Bishov made two more big stops, the next in the 23rd minute, and the last in the 37th minute to keep Nomads scoreless at the half.
Jose Hernandez doubled RSL-AZ U-17/18’s lead in the 58th minute on a clever defensive play. He intercepted a poor Nomads pass out of the back, and immediately played to Corey Baird, who then slotted Hernandez into the box. Hernandez cut the onrushing goalkeeper to his right, and finished far post for his eighth goal all season.
Nomads SC U-17/18 were able to cut the lead in half in the 80th minute on a questionable penalty in the box, but for the most part were held back due to RSL-AZ U-17/18’s impressive second half performance.
Baird scored RSL-AZ U-17/18’s final goal three minutes into stoppage time on a free-kick that was earned by Damian German. Baird stepped up and curled the shot into the left-side netting for his eighth goal on the year.
RSL-AZ U-17/18 will return to action on Saturday, April 26th at home against the LA Galaxy.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Grande Sports Academy is pleased to announce that Real Salt Lake has signed defender Justen Glad to a Homegrown Player contract. Glad, 17, is now the tenth player to turn pro and the sixth player to join Real Salt Lake since the inception of the Grande Sports Academy in 2010.
Glad hails from Tucson, Arizona, and joined the Grande Sports Academy at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. Glad helped the RSL-AZ U-16 team win the 2013 U.S. Soccer Development Academy National Championship, where he scored the match-winning goal in RSL-AZ’s 4-2 win over Solar Chelsea. For his efforts, Glad was named to the USSDA Western Conference Starting XI and was recently named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as an All-American in 2013.
Glad emerged as one of the most promising prospects in the Real Salt Lake – Arizona academy system when he was offered a spot in the Under-17 Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida, after he impressed in a lone showcase match at the 2012 U.S. Soccer Winter Showcase in Florida.
Glad participated in the 2013 U-17 CONCACAF Championship, which determined the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup participants from CONCACAF. After the U-17 Men’s National Team were eliminated from the FIFA U-17 World Cup, he continued to receive call ups to the U-17 Men’s National Team and saw action in the Caspian Cup in Azerbaijan and an international tournament in Niigata, Japan. More recently, he was included in U.S. Soccer’s U-18 Men’s National Team camp in early January, and participated in another U-18 Men’s National Team camp in Carson, California, in April.
Glad saw extended playing time with the Real Salt Lake Reserve League squad in 2013. In just his second call up, Glad became the first active academy player to be named to the starting XI. Glad was originally verbally committed to Stanford University.
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Four Real Salt Lake – Arizona Academy players will travel to Carson, California on Friday for a pair of U-18 international friendlies. Sebastian Saucedo, Christian Herrera and Justen Glad are among the 24-players called into U.S. U-18 head coach Hugo Perez’s Men’s National Team, while Josh Doughty has been called in by Canadian U-18 head coach Rob Gale.
The friendlies will have a CONCACAF feel as the U.S. and Canada will be joined by Mexico. U.S. will face off with Canada on April 8th and Mexico on April 12th. After playing the U.S., Canada will square off against Mexico on April 10th.
This marks the second call-up for Herrera and Saucedo in 2014, as they both participated in the prestigious Copa del Atlantico in Las Palmas, Spain, in early February. They, along with Glad and teammate Doughty have helped guide the Real Salt Lake – Arizona U-15/16 Academy team to its strongest start in RSL-AZ’s four-year history.
Saucedo leads the U-15/16 age group in scoring with 20 goals. Doughty is second on the RSL-AZ U-15/16 team with 9 goals, while Glad has notched 5 goals. Herrera has earned 13 clean sheets through nineteen league starts. The RSL-AZ U-15/16 Academy team leads the Southwest Division and is the current #2 seed in the U-15/16 Playoff Pool.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Off the field success is just as important as on the field success for a student-athlete, and at the Grande Sports Academy home of the Real Salt Lake – Arizona Academy Residential Academic Tutor Gary Shepler has created a program that prepares residential players for the important SAT and ACT admission college exams.
“Lauren Crum (Director of Academic and Personal Development) and Gary have set it up to where we go and take the ACT and SAT exams on Saturdays at school so we get practice in an actual environment,” said junior Duncan Storey. “Throughout the week, Monday through Thursday from 8:00-9:30, we sit down and do practice ACT problems.”
Shelper takes residential players from the Grande Sports Academy to Mission Heights Preparatory High School every other Saturday. There the players are put in a familiar environment with the same exact time and pace that they would experience in a real test.
“It’s helped us get extra practice in the areas we need to work on when we take the actual tests,” said Trent Lowe.
“I find it very impressive that boys who have a challenging schedule already will take and give up an entire Saturday morning to get their skills in line to take these tests both the ACT and the SAT,” said Shepler.
Residential players at the Grande Sports Academy are also given the opportunity to participate in study hall hours throughout the week where many of them have flourished and have been named to the “Grande Sports Academy 4.0 Club“.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Real Salt Lake – Arizona U-15/16 Academy team continued its impressive run of form in 2014 defeating Real So Cal U-15/16, 1-0, on Sunday morning at Oak Park High School.
Josh Doughty scored the lone goal in the match while RSL-AZ goalkeeper Christian Herrera earned his 13th clean sheet on the season.
Doughty’s match winning goal was scored in the 7th minute when he collected a loose ball on top of the box and took a touch to his right before he unleashed a powerful shot that hit a defender and was then rerouted into the back of the net.
The match started to slow down after the goal and other than Diego Silva shot in the 19 minute, chances in the first half were limited for both sides.
After the restart the second half was more of the same. RSL-AZ U-15/16’s defense limited Real So Cal to minor chances and a shot from outside the box that was not threatening in the 51st minute. Silva, Danny Acosta and Fahot Yogol all had looks, but their shots missed the mark.
Real So Cal moved all their players forward in the final minutes, but it was not enough as the Claret-and-Cobalt held on for the victory which was RSL-AZ U-15/16’s 16th on the season in 20 matches played.
RSL-AZ U-15/16 will face Nomads SC on Sunday, April 6th at the Grande Sports World with kick off set for 1:30 PM.
