Generation Adidas Cup Recap: Saucedo wins Golden Boot & Golden Ball, RSL finishes as runner-up

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Nothing could separate Real Salt Lake U-17 and Stoke City U-17, as they faced each other for the second time in six days in the championship match of the 2013-14 Generation Adidas Final Round in Dallas, Texas.

In group play on April 15, Real Salt Lake bested Stoke City on penalty kicks, and in the championship match on Sunday it was Stoke City’s turn to exact some revenge, as they defeated RSL on penalty kicks 3-2.

Overall, RSL showed very well during the 2013-14 Generation Adidas Cup. Sebastian Saucedo was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player and the Golden Boot as its leading scorer.

RSL won their group in Central Region qualifying, and won it again in the Final Round. RSL combined for 34 goals scored across the whole tournament and only conceded 12 goals in 10 matches.

GSA Exports: Allen, Lopez, Spencer and Gall all shine for U-20 MNT during Dallas Cup run

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Grande Sports Academy Exports is a feature in which we track the progress of former Grande Sports Academy players who are playing professionally. There are currently nine professional players in five different countries that have ties to the Grande Sports Academy. GSA Exports will track players who have been called up to national team duty and Real Salt Lake Reserve League matches.

NOTE: Nico Muñiz originally signed with RSL, and is unattached. Romain Gall has signed a youth contract with FC Lorient.

Real Salt Lake U-17 defeat LA Galaxy U-17, advance to semifinals of 2013-14 Generation Adidas Cup

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-17 team soundly defeated LA Galaxy U-17, 6-1, in the final group match of the Final Round at the 2013-14 Generation Adidas Cup in Dallas, Texas.

Real Salt Lake U-17 piled the goals on early with Alex Knox drawing first blood for the Claret-and-Cobalt in the 6th minute when he poked home a rebound from a Josh Doughty saved shot. Justen Glad added another two minutes later on Tate Schmitt Cross.

Sebastian Saucedo scored the first of his two goals in the 10th minute when he chipped the ‘keeper from 25 yards out. Schmitt scored RSL’s fourth goal after he finished an Knox shot that went side. Saucedo recorded his brace in the 26th minute.

LA pulled on back in the 41st minute, but had no chance for a comeback as Diego “Diablo” Silva capped off the scoring for RSL in the 58th minute.

Real Salt Lake U-17 has advanced to the semifinals, which will be played on Saturday night in Toyota Stadium, home of FC Dallas. Opponent TBD. The match will be streamed LIVE on MLSSoccer.com.

Dallas Cup Update: Four players with RSL ties help U-20 MNT advance to semifinals

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The United States U-20 Men’s National Team is onto the semifinals after topping Bracket C of the Gordon Jago Super Group in the 35th edition of the famed Dallas Cup, and leading the charge has been four players with ties to the Grande Sports Academy.

Among the ranks of U.S Soccer’s U-20 MNT, are Jordan Allen and Benji Lopez have both signed with Real Salt Lake; Ben Spencer, who joined FC Molde (Norway) in 2012, and is now with the North American Soccer League’s Indy Eleven after being loaned earlier this year; and Romain Gall, who left the Academy and joined Europeans side FC Lorient (France).

The quartet has impressed to the tune of four goals and two assists in three group matches.

In the first match versus Argentinean side River Plate, Spencer scored a brace after finishing off an Allen assist for the first goal and converting a late penalty for the match winning goal. Allen added another assist on a Rubio Rubin equalizer in the 74th minute. In the second match on the following day against German side Eintracht Frankfurt, Lopez scored the opening goal in the 43rd minute, while Gall added another late tally for the Americans.

The third match was a quite one for the quartet as they didn’t contribute on any goals or assists in the U-20’s win 1-0 over Mexican side Tigres UANL.

The U-20s now move on and will face Brazilian side Fluminense on Friday night at 5:00 p.m. Arizona time.

Generation Adidas Cup: Real Salt Lake U-17 defeat Stoke City on penalties

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-17 team defeated English club Stoke City U-17 on penalties after the both sides traded stoppage time goals on Tuesday night in the second match of the final round of the 2013-14 Generation Adidas Cup.

Real Salt Lake U-17 was trailing midway through the second half when substitute Leo Fuchs scored an equalizer after the ball bounced out to him on the left side. Stoke City then scored what looked to be the match winning goal seconds into stoppage time.

Trailing yet again, RSL U-17 pushed for another goal, and that came from Tate Schmitt, who collected a Justen Glad bomb from midway. Schmitt cut to his left, and fired a low screamer that went into the back of the net.

Real Salt Lake U-17 outlasted Stoke City on penalties, and need a victory over LA Galaxy on Thursday to secure a semifinal spot.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Real Salt Lake U-17’s continued their impressive form with a 2-1 win over Toronto FC on Monday in the opening match of the final round of the 2013-14 Generation Adidas Cup.

Real Salt Lake U-17, winners of Central Region qualifying, have been slotted into Group B with LA Galaxy U-17, Toronto FC U-17 and English club Stoke City U-17. All the teams play each other once in a round-robin format. The winner of the group will advance to the second round on Friday, April 14th, which will then be followed by the final round on Sunday, April 20th, 2014.

In the match against Toronto FC, Josh Doughty scored the opening goal in the 20th minute after he was assisted by Evan Waldrep. Sebastian Saucedo added an insurance goal in the second half on a penalty kick. Toronto scored a goal late, but RSL deterred them from scoring a late equalizer.

RSL’s opponent on Tuesday night is Stoke City, who defeated LA Galaxy 2-0 on Monday.
