CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake U-16 Academy team remains perfect at home by defeating Crossfire Premier 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. Through five league matches at home, the Claret-and-Cobalt has yet to concede a goal and have outscored opponents 17-0.
Sebastian Saucedo and Diego “Diablo” Silva scored for the Claret-and-Cobalt, while goalkeeper Christian Herrera earned his eight clean sheets.
“They were able to get the result; they got an early goal and a good goal late, said Academy coach Mike Kraus.”Overall you can’t harp too much on a victory, but I think there are a lot of things they can improve upon and continue to get better at. But the streaks are something we will always compliment them on and it’s not easy to get shutouts and we need to commend them on their efforts.”
Saucedo wasted no time and opened up his 2014 goal scoring tally in the third minute when he made a smart turn from an Alex Knox pass on the right side. Saucedo attacked the box with urgency, separated himself from a Crossfire defender and finished the effort into the far post for his ninth league goal.
Knox and Saucedo along with Evan Waldrep and Diego “Diablo” Silva continued to push the effort and would have doubled RSL’s lead if not for a timely Crossfire defense, which eliminated the channels for RSL in the final third.
Second half substitute Kris Fourcand made the most of his appearance, when he connected with Silva just three minutes after being brought on in the 64th-minute. Silva beat a defender with pace down the left-wing, passed to Fourcand, who had his back to the net, and continued his run. Fourcand turned and played a through ball to Silva, who fired across the face of goal and into the far post for his fourth goal on the season.
Defensively, RSL’s backline: Justen Glad, Miles Stray, Gavino Carranza and Aaron Herrera made things easy for goalkeeper Christian Herrera, as he was called upon once and made a brilliant double-save to preserve the shutout.
“I credit everything to my centerbacks, my whole defensive block,” said Christian Herrera. “They work hard every week in practice and its thanks for them we can get these shutouts.”
The RSL-AZ U-16 team will put their perfect start at home to the test this weekend against Strikers FC on Saturday at 1:30pm.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – In the first match of 2014, the Real Salt Lake U-18 Academy team extended their unbeaten home streak to five matches following their three-goal shutout win over Crossfire Premier at the Grande Sports Academy on Saturday morning.
Midway through the second half the wheels came off for Crossfire Premier as Sam Gleadle and Corey Baird abused the Crossfire defense to the tune of a three-goal rally in seven minutes. Holding onto a one goal advantage, Baird was brought on in the 65th-minute and provided an immediate spark moments later when he dribbled through three defenders and lofted the ball to an unmarked Gleadle, who converted his first Academy goal. Five minutes later Gleadle returned the favor when he attacked the right-wing with pace on a counter. Gleadle looked up and passed to Baird, who charged up the middle of the pitch. Baird took a touch to his left and finished the effort far post for the third and final goal.
“Sam did a great job because he had to lead the line and he did a good job doing that,” said Academy coach Tony Bruce. “A goal and two assist is not bad at all. If you can get your high forward to have an output like that it’s fantastic. I thought Corey Baird coming in helped as well and he made a difference, but Sammy was very good today.”
Through eleven USSDA league matches, the RSL-AZ U-18 Academy team (7-1-3) sits atop the Western Conference and has conceded an U-18 league low of 7 goals.
Playing in their first match in over a month, the Claret-and-Cobalt showed no signs on rust early on, but their attack was consistently stymied in the Crossfire final third. Jack Gayton, Jose Hernandez and Damian German each had a shot inside the box that was blocked by the Crossfire defense, who weathered the aggressive RSL attack. Defensively, RSL-AZ’s backline held the Crossfire defense at bay and limited the opponents’ opportunities to shots well outside of the 18, which ended up at easy stops for RSL-AZ goalkeeper Luis Barraza.
Two-minutes after the halftime break, RSL-AZ found the back of the net when Hernandez and Germain connected on a short passing sequence, but unfortunately Hernandez was called offside. RSL-AZ’s attack continued to push and the Claret-and-Cobalt’s efforts paid off in the 64th-minute. Jack Gayton played a ball up to Gleadle, who made a piercing run into the box and headed to the touchline. The Crossfire defense collapsed around him, which allowed German to run up and find space in front of goal. Gleadle passed back to German, who tapped in his third Academy goal.
The RSL-AZ U-18 team has earned five clean sheets and will put their five match unbeaten home streak on the line against Strikers FC on Saturday at 11:00am.

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Real Salt Lake Academy coaches scheduled a friendly match against Phoenix club SC del Sol on Saturday afternoon after the Academy matches, and an RSL squad comprised of U-16 and U-18 players defeated SC del Sol 5-0.
Luke Novick scored the opening goal in the first half and assisted on what coach Freddy Juarez claimed as the greatest goal in Academy history in the second half. Novick on the right-wing chipped a ball to the middle of the pitch. The ball struck a SC del Sol player on the shoulder and before it hit the ground, Judah Rashirai ran up from underneath it and fired a bicycle-kick shot, which sailed over the goalkeeper and into the left side netting.
Danny Moreno scored the third goal when the SC del Sol failed to clear the ball out of the box and newcomer Leo Fuchs scored the fourth when Jonathan Min trapped a poor clearance and played a through ball to Fuchs, who finished near post. Nicholas LaMonica scored the fifth and final goal when Javi Avelar played a ball to the back post. LaMonica trapped with his chest and dribbled to the touchline and fired a high screamer into the far post.
