CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Southwest Division leaders Real Salt Lake-AZ bested Northwest Division leaders Seattle Sounders, 3-1, in a United States Soccer Development Academy U-15/16 West Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at the Grande Sports World.
Justen Glad, Josh Doughty and Terrell Lowe notched the goals for Real Salt Lake-AZ U-15/16, who have yet to drop any points at home this season through eight matches.
Real Salt Lake U-15/16, looking to shake off a rare loss in their most recent USSDA league match in the previous weekend’s action, opened their goal tally nine minutes into the match on a Seattle defensive blunder. Tate Schmitt whipped in a free kick from the left-wing that the Seattle goalkeeper couldn’t corral in the air. The ball slipped through his fingers and dropped to an unmarked Justen Glad on the backpost, who knocked in the opening goal from close range.
The Claret-and-Cobalt doubled their lead fourteen minutes into the second half on a calmly converted penalty. Doughty attacked space and cut into the box before he was clipped from behind. He stepped up and slotted the shot into the right-side netting for his seventh goal on the season.
Lowe was brought on as a 70th-minute substitute, and he scored RSL-AZ’s third and final goal three minutes later on a cross-and-header. Gavino Carranza dribbled to the touchline from the left-wing and lifted a ball to the middle of the box where an unmarked Lowe waited before he headed the ball into the net.
Immediately after the restart a Seattle player was shown a second yellow for an ill-timed tackle near midfield. The send-off didn’t faze Seattle as they picked up the urgency and stormed into RSL-AZ’s half in the dying minutes and scored their lone goal on a tight-angled shot from the touchline. The goal was just the second goal given up by the RSL-AZ U-15/16 team at home in eight matches.
Real Salt Lake-AZ U-15/16′s will travel Los Angeles this upcoming weekend. They face Arsenal FC U-15/16 on Saturday, March 29th, at Riverside Community College with kickoff set for 12:30 PM PST. The following day, RSL-AZ will square off against Real So Cal at Oak Park High School with kickoff set for 1:30 PM PST.
