Real Salt Lake – Arizona U-15/16 crush Arsenal FC U-15/16
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Real Salt Lake – Arizona U-15/16 rolled to a 4-0 win over Southwest Division foes Arsenal FC U-15/16 on Saturday afternoon at Riverside Community College.
D.J. Villegas scored for RSL-AZ in the first half while Diego “Diablo” Silva, Josh Doughty and Leo Fuchs all found the back of the net in the second half.
Villegas opened up the scoring for the Claret-and-Cobalt in the 26th-minute when Miles Stray, on the right-wing, sent in a low cross. Villegas got a header on the ball, which slipped through the ‘keepers hands and into the back of the net for his fourth goal in his last five matches.
Silva looked to add another goal before the half when he started a run from deep inside RSL-AZ U-15/16’s half. He cut through Arsenal FC’s defense and dribbled through four players before he rounded the ‘keeper and fired a shot near post. An Arsenal defender recovered and slipped on the goalline extending his arm. Silva’s shot hit the players arm, but no call was made and the half was called moments later.
In an almost mirror copy of the play before the half, Silva scored RSL U-15/16’s second goal in the 45th-minute on a through ball from Evan Waldrep. Silva rounded the ‘keeper and finished far post. Doughty scored his 9th goal on the season in the 60th-minute when he finished a pass from Danny Acosta with his left foot.
Leo Fuchs closed out RSL-AZ U-15/16’s on potential Goal of the Year nominee. Terrell Lowe charged down the left-wing and lofted a cross to the back post to an unmarked Fuchs, who calmly waited for the ball and smashed a volley into the upper post for his first career academy goal.
Up next for the RSL-AZ U-15/16 is Real So Cal Thousand Oaks with kick off set for 1:30 PM.

Real Salt Lake-AZ U-17/18’s late goal preserves undefeated streak in 2-2 draw with Seattle Sounders U-17/18’s
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – A late goal from Sam Gleadle preserved Real Salt Lake-AZ U-17/18’s undefeated match streak in a 2-2 draw with Seattle Sounders U-17/18 at the Grande Sports World on Saturday morning.
Seattle scored the go-ahead goal in the 74th-minute after a prolonged attack in RSL-AZ’s final third. The Claret-and-Cobalt’s defense failed to clear back-to-back crosses and on Seattle’s third attempt an unmarked player on the left-wing picked his head up and whipped in a cross that was deflected into RSL-AZ’s net.
This was the fourth match all year in which RSL-AZ trailed their opponent, and their response to the late deceit was an immediate attack with numbers in Seattle’s final third. The payoff occurred in the 82nd-minute when Te Wihongi attacked space down the right-wing and curled in a high free kick. Seattle’s goalkeeper mistimed the jump and wasn’t able to corral the cross. The ball slipped through his fingers and dropped to Sam Gleadle, who was just inches off the touchline. He lofted a shot over the onrushing Seattle defense and into the back of the net for his ninth goal in eight matches.
The draw ended RSL-AZ’s seven match winning streak, but extended their undefeated streak to nine matches.
Both academy teams jumped out of the gates with an aggressive start creating multiple chances on either end. The breakthrough for RSL-AZ occurred in the 28th-minute when Gui Leme intercepted a poor Seattle throw-in deep inside their own half. He passed to Damian German, who dribbled to the center of the pitch before he rifled a screamer from twenty-five yards out into the far post for his fifth goal on the season.
In a bizarre sequence six-minutes later, Seattle scored an equalizer when a curled free kick took a massive bounce in the box and caromed into the net. The ball did not touch any Seattle players while en route.
Seattle’s confidence grew after the goal and they maintained a strong grip on the flow of the match until the dying minutes of the first half. In the closing minute of the first half RSL-AZ countered when Seattle pushed too high. German lifted a ball over Seattle’s backline to Corey Baird, who charged at the net. He then chipped the goalkeeper, who ran off his line, but pushed the shot too wide as it hit the post and bounced out. A mirror image of this play occurred in the 90th-minute when Gleadle played a through ball to Baird. This time, Baird’s chip was too powerful as it sailed over the crossbar.
Real Salt Lake-AZ U-17/18’s will put their undefeated streak to the test this upcoming weekend in Los Angeles. They face Arsenal FC U-17/18 on Saturday, March 29th, at Riverside Community College with kickoff set for 10:00 AM PST. The following day RSL-AZ will square off against Real So Cal at Oak Park High School with kickoff set for 11:00 AM PST.

APTOS, Calif. – Six U-17/18 Real Salt Lake Academy players combined for six goals in a win over Santa Cruz Breakers U-17/18 Academy on Saturday afternoon in Aptos, California. The victory has extended the Claret-and-Cobalt’s winning streak to six matches, surpassing the previous season high of five matches.
Jose Hernandez opened up RSL’s scoring account in the 7th-minute on a brilliantly executed combination between he and Gui Leme. After receiving a pass near the top of the box from Leme, Hernandez cut inside and dribbled through three defenders before he juked the Santa Cruz goalkeeper and finished far post.
RSL then scored three goals in quick succession, the first from Eric Carbajal, who notched his 12th goal to date in the 21st-minute from a Te Wihongi cross. Luis Lopez found the back of the net in the 26th-minute on a beautifully curled free kick for his first goal on the season. Corey Baird scored two minutes later for his seventh goal all year.
After the halftime break, the Claret-and-Cobalt scored their fifth goal midway through the second half when Sam Gleadle found the back of the net for his eighth goal in six matches. Luke Novick closed out RSL’s impressive victory with an 89th-minute goal, his first all year. Matthias Binder passed to ball to Novick, who was unmarked near the penalty spot. He then took a touch and blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in.
